About this scholarship
What it is
The Japanese government's scholarship, run by MEXT since 1954, has funded more than 140,000 international students and takes 8,000–10,000 new scholars a year across seven categories. For a Somali applicant the one that is open is the Research Student category — study for a master's or a PhD at a Japanese graduate school, usually beginning with a period as a research student under a professor before formal enrolment. Many graduate programmes are taught in English, and no Japanese is needed to apply: MEXT pays for six to twelve months of Japanese language study first where it is needed.
